BY NATALIE – Over the holidays, I’m changing up my usual motto of “more is more” and taking a different approach for once. This time less is more. You may be wondering why. Basically, I recently came across my new favourite party dress and it is, for all intents and purposes, a negligee. There’s no denying that the slip dress has had a firm place in our wardrobes for some time now. Plenty of fashionistas were pulling this stylish piece on over a shirt, sweater or pullover last season to create a cool ensemble. So what’s new about this look? Well, actually, nothing at all. And yet the little nightdress is here for the holidays and it’s much more elegant and racier than ever. Never fear – I’m here to help you nail that “just got out of bed” look and avoid any potential fashion faux pas along the way by showing you how to style your slip dress perfectly in time for that hot party coming up in your diary..
First and foremost, make sure that your favourite dress is a high-quality garment. The dress should be soft and flowing with neat seams. And check that the material isn’t see-through. It’s also important that your dress isn’t too short or too low-cut. I always aim for an interesting choice of colour too, so you can see why I selected this bronze number from Hanro as my perfect party outfit.
A longline blazer is exactly what my lightweight, barely-there dress needs. The modern cut and contrasting lining bring my look bang up-to-date, which is why I fell in love with this Pinko blazer at first sight.
When it came to choosing a bag, I had to be careful not to go for anything that would detract from my look. I wanted a bag that would subtly highlight the image I was going for. Don’t forget: The smaller the bag, the more feminine the look. But the best thing about the Diane von Furstenberg bag I went for in the end has to be the clever ring-shaped clasp.
If you ask me, accessories should be approached with caution. Does that mean avoiding all jewellery? No, not necessarily. After all, a delicate hint of sparkle – in this case a silver necklace from Ted Baker – can add a lot to a playful look like this one.
